The way Germany behaved on recent days, politically speaking,
cancelled everything good that was done in the last 50 years, in order
to give the nation a more "human" face, after the horrible events
regarding WWII.According to Juergen Habermas, what was done to Greece was a punishing act. He in fact accused Frau Merkel of politically destroying German reputation, a reputation slowly earned after World War II. He also adds that the way they behaved towards Tsipras government was punishing and vindicative."I believe the German government, including its social democratic faction, destroyed in one evening, everything political that Germany built in half century." Adding that previous governments showed more political sensibility and a post nationalist mentality."Threatening Grexit, Germany put itself, with no shame, as European discipline responsible and for the first time, it has openly claimed European homogeneity. The reforms requested to an already weak Greece will only discourage it's exhausted population, destroying all growth possibilities."
To keep up to speed with recent developments, let's see how out main protagonists are:
Today the Bundestag vastly approved to start negotiations with Athens. With 439 in favor, 119 against and 40 that did not vote.
On an interview, when she is not making refugees cry, Frau Merkel said it would be irresponsible not to give Greece another chance, in spite the concerns over Greece possibilities to start developing again.
She also thanked Wolfgang Shaeuble regarding his involvement in the Greece negotiations, with the German parliament dedicating to him a standing ovation. She also took the opportunity to confirm that there wont be any debit relief, sustaining that it would be against the EU treaty and to alter that would be the end of the union.
Shaeuble declares: "Everyone is in favor of saving Greece, but we need to see which path to take, choosing the one that will work. Its not only about Greece but about Europe, so we need to keep our heads cold and decide how to strengthen integration in Europe."Meantime Christine Lagarde declares that to be able to overcome this crisis, the debt should be relieved so that Greece can handle better the situation, more precisely the deadlines must be extended and the interests lowered.
